Stalcup's Trico Variation (Trico Dun)

Image
Here's the link to the video:  Stalcup's Trico Variation (Trico Dun) Video It's Trico time here in Colorado and around the United States.  At the beginning of the hatch the fish will focus on the male and also female duns.  The males have a black thorax, which is sometimes pretty bulky. Watch the naturals when you start seeing them at the beginning of the hatch and if you see one get eaten or you just see a rise, but one of my Stalcup's Trico Variations on, get a good drift, and enjoy the results. If the CDC gets wet and the fly sinks mid-drift, let it go.  Often times fish will eat sunken Tricos.  As the hatch progresses, you can still fish this, but if your dun keeps getting ignored, throw on a spinner.

Covid-19 Fly Fishing in Colorado

Image
What a difference a few months can make.  My last blog post dealt with the beginning of the pandemic in the good 'ol U.S. of A., but since then we've been holed up for two months and states are already beginning to re-open.  My trip to Utah seems like a year ago...     What's interesting is that here in Colorado Governor Polis did NOT lock down fishing although people were supposed to stay close to home.  Based on some of the crowds I have witnessed that has not been happening.  I have also seen plenty of out-of-state plates the last few weeks. Crowds at Deckers have been ridiculous, but due to the concentration of quality fish there, that will always be the case, especially on the weekends.   I think a lot of fisherman that lost their jobs and were quarantined realized that their one release was the river.     Honestly, that's how I have felt although I have been remotely teaching for two months now.  My Covid-19 pani...

Fly Fishing the Green River near Dutch John, Utah

Image
Right before COVID-19 impacted our lives, my good friend Darren and I were lucky enough to travel to Utah to fish a special creek as well as the Green River below Flaming Gorge. It was a surreal experience because everyday we fished and enjoyed the splendor of nature and every evening we read about everything that was going on back in "reality." It helped me realize once again that fly fishing truly is an escape from real life. We made it a three river trip in order to drive part way the first day before breaking off the largest chunk of travel on day 2. Day 1 we fished the Eagle River on the way to Glenwood Springs and caught some nice fish.  I wouldn't say that the fishing was "on fire" yet, but the river yielded some healthy browns and rainbow trout.  I caught this very nice brown on a dry fly when the midges started coming off.  They were the big "Spring Midge" and this particular fish gobbled down a Palomino Midge.
