2020 Winter Fishing and Spring on the Horizon

Image
Winter fishing is what you make of it.  If you can forget about the stinging wind, frozen guides, COLD feet, and chilly hands...you're going to have a special time. Some of you know I prefer fishing dry flies in the winter and this winter has not been all that different.  I have fished an array of midge patterns at Deckers, 11 Mile Canyon, and the Arkansas Tailwater in Pueblo.   This brown was caught at 11 Mile on a size 24 midge dry fly.  I fish size 22-26 midge dries in the winter and if you can match size of the naturals by going smaller, the color doesn't always seem to matter.  This fish had some beautiful colors. If you are interested in the style of midge patterns that I fish during the winter months, here you go. Hook: 20-26 emerger hook Thread: Veevus 16/0 Black, Cream or Olive Wing: CDC Puff White, Dark, or Natural Legs: Grizzly hackle - Appropriately sized I tie the thread back, tie in the puff, tie in the h...

The Miracle Mile in Wyoming

Image
Fishing in Wyoming last month was pretty epic.  My amigos and I had planned the trip for quite some time, which included not one, but TWO Clark boys traveling from Upstate New York to visit me and fish.  They got a head start on the rest of us and got some time to fish together.  The weather looked a bit ominous and the Clark's dealt with the worst of it, but overall it ended up being decent.  Here are a few that Jared and Darren reigned in those first two days: Not bad, right?  These guys can fish.   We booked a comfy Airbnb for a long weekend right near the river, which was some solid planning from my buddy Tim.  Wyoming is barren, but beautiful.  With almost no ambient light, the stars and evening chill were out in full force each night.  It was very soothing to be in the middle of nowhere again. We left super early in the morning in order to get up there to meet our guide, Mickey.  Since Jared and Darren h...

Memories of Montana

Image
Sorry for the long delay.  School and soccer started up in August and the past two months have gone by in a flash!  It happens every year and yet I am always surprised when I have to write 10/1 on my whiteboard at school.  Crazy. So, Montana.  I loved Montana and specifically, the city of Missoula.  I visited a friend that I used to work with and he was nice enough to let me crash for several nights at his new house by the college.  I had never driven through Wyoming so my first time was an experience.  Seeing the Speed Limit signs say "80" was fantastic and I enjoyed the scenery and the views.  I ended up crashing in Sheridan and I found some delicious food at Wyoming's Rib and Chop House.  I had the juiciest pork chop of my life.  If you ever end up in Sheridan go there. As soon as I arrived in Missoula after a beautiful drive through Montana my buddy put me straight to work moving some heavy items around because they were redoing ...

Fly Fishing in Spain

Image
Until this summer I had never fished for trout outside of the United States.  I was lucky enough to stumble across @fishing.emotions on Instagram and the rest is history. I contacted him, made a plan, and made it happen.  My friend Sarah was traveling with me to Barcelona and eventually Girona, which is near the river, so I was able to fish three evenings looking for BIG rising fish. Many people know I love dry fly fishing, but over the past year or so my nymphing game has picked up.  However, in Spain, on this river, dry fly fishing was by far the best way to attempt a shot at a "big guy." If you check out Ekaitz's Instagram, you will see what I mean by "big guy."  He catches (and works very to hard to help his clients catch) giant brown trout on dry flies. The river is wild and beautiful.  The experience was surreal and enlightening.  The new sounds, the Spanish wildlife, and the incredible scenery made it a truly special trip. If you ever fish ...
